Desktop App
In addition to the Microsoft Word plugin, Writage includes a desktop app. It lets you preview Markdown and DOCX files and export between formats, without needing Word installed. You can view documents as formatted previews, but editing happens in Word — the app itself is view-only.
The desktop app uses the same conversion engine as the Word plugin, so the output is identical.
Installation
The desktop app is included in the Writage installer alongside the Word plugin. After installing Writage, you can find it at:
- Windows: Start Menu → Writage App
- macOS:
/Applications/Writage.app
Opening files
Click the Open button in the toolbar and select a .md, .mdx, or .docx file. The document will be displayed as a formatted preview.
Both Markdown and DOCX files are supported; the format is detected from the file extension.
Paste Markdown
Click the Paste Markdown button to preview Markdown content directly from the clipboard. This is useful for quickly checking how content from ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub, or any other source will look when converted.
No file is created; the preview is temporary.
Saving and exporting
Once a document is open in the app, you can export it:
- Save as Markdown — converts the current document to a
.mdfile. You will be prompted to choose the save location. - Save as DOCX — converts the current document to a
.docxWord file.
Math rendering
Mathematical equations are rendered. Both inline math ($...$) and display math ($$...$$) are supported. See Math & Equations for the full syntax.
License
The desktop app uses the same license as the Word plugin.
- Windows: The license is applied automatically — if you have already activated Writage in Word, the desktop app will also be activated.
- macOS: Due to system sandboxing, the desktop app stores its license separately from the Word plugin. You will need to enter your license key in the desktop app the first time you use it. Click the License button in the toolbar to activate.
A 15-day free trial is available and starts automatically when you first launch the app.
